5.5A To classify two dimensional figures by attributes and properties. The student is expected to classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy of sets and subsets using graphic organizers based on their attributes and properties.
So we started this week by journaling common vocabulary seen in sets and subsets. For example: congruent sides, angles, parallel sides, perpendicular lines etc.
I have found that the biggest problem for students, is the vocabulary. So I created a Quizizz about vocabulary. Students came to class and practiced on the vocabulary Quizizz every day for 10-15 min. This is the first time I have ever used Quizizz but I AM IN LOVE!!!
What is Quizizz? It is a free data gathering tool much like Kahoot or Socrative. But there are certain aspects of Quizizz that make it stand out from the other two programs. First off, unlike Kahoot the problem and answer choices are on the students device not the board. Secondly, when you start a quiz, the entire quiz is sent to the students to allow individuals the time they need to answer the question. The questions and answers are jumbled so that students cannot look at their neighbor for help.
The students LOVE Quizizz!!! As soon as they join a game, they are issued an avatar. This is one of the students' favorite parts.
Students and their avatar are shown on the teachers desktop. The kids love to look at each others avatar displayed on the board.
Another cool thing about Quizizz, is the homework option. You can open a Quizizz for homework and it remains open for hours. Send students the code and they can complete the homework from any device, even a phone.
I used Quizizz everyday for students to practice vocabulary. I would open it up in the morning and create a homework, share the game code and then students would practice in the classroom.
Another cool thing I did this week was print out these shapes from NCTM. You can download the pdf here.
I colored them and then cut out the shapes and glued them onto index cards. I gave each student a card and then as a class I asked attribute questions. I had designated the right side of the room as the answer YES and the left side of the room as the answer NO. If their shape contained that attribute, students moved to the YES side of the room. If their shape did not contain that attribute, they moved to the NO side of the room. Students checked each others and sometimes corrected each others answer.
Another activity we completed used Google for Education. Students were given two shapes this week in order to compare using google docs. Students were asked to work together to create a venn diagram comparing two given shapes.
They were asked to compare lines, sides, angles and use shape vocabulary.
We also looked a several Shape Hierarchy Diagrams. This is where the rigor of STAAR comes into place. Students completed a gallery walk, looking at the posters and answering higher-order thinking questions about each poster. To make it more fun, I put the questions that correspond with the poster on a cootie catcher, or fortune teller.
Students love using the fortune teller rather than a worksheet with pre-determined questions. I made my kids answer at least 3 questions for each poster. Students wrote the answers down in their journals.
After they visited every poster, we came together as a class and talked about each poster. Visit my TpT store to snag this activity!
I assessed my students on Friday using questions similar to what students would see on STAAR, and I was amazed! I believe that all the activities and discussions about shapes really helped students master the concept!
